The American type Labrador is sensitive, intelligent, and active. The British type is generally larger, calmer, and less energetic than its American counterpart. However, it can also be a little sillier. Both types of Lab are famously friendly, playful, and outgoing. Areas which needs regular trimming are ears, tail, feet neck. Both the puppies need regular bath and trimming, and golden retriever needs more care because of his hairs. Both pups have a double coat.

Labs require an undercoat rake to remove the dead hair from the undercoat. You can then use a slicker brush for overall grooming. For the topcoat, many experts recommend a good quality slicker brush for your golden retriever. More than one brushing per week is recommended for Goldens. And yes never shave the coat of a golden retriever. And beside grooming and taking care of their hair always remember that drop-eared dogs are prone to ear infection, so take care of their ears too.
